‘Summer Sizzler’  - Children's event

by Alison Perry - 12 July 2008

Not quite a ‘Summer Sizzler’ but more of a ‘Summer Dry and Blowy’ on 28 June saw 39 children plus some under 3s with their parents join a team of leaders on St Andrew’s Green for the Railway Children’s morning of activities based on the theme of ‘Creation’.

Children moved between activities using a ‘passport’ showing them what was on offer.  After each activity their passport was endorsed and after they had completed all 8 activities their passport was entered in a draw for prizes.   There was a good number of adults leading the activities which included making hanging baskets and making a ‘horn of plenty’ in which to collect fruit and sweets and chocolates which they made;  games such as giant ‘Connect 4’ and quoits;  a devious crazy golf course; a treasure hunt to find natural objects hidden by the leaders and making a natural collage which was the focus for the worship, led by Jim, which ended the morning.  Mixed in with the activities was an opportunity for the children to have hot dogs, cakes and drinks.

Some comments from the children after the event were:   “It was really good”;  “We made nice truffles and we ate them and they were really nice”;  “the cake was yummy” and “the sausages were cool!”  (so it seems that if we have another event, we will have to include some food!)

Some comments from the adults involved in helping were:  “Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and had a lot of fun”;  “It was good to see so many children who had come to the ‘Easter Eggstravaganza’ return for this event, bringing with them their friends”;  “It was good to see the church and school working in partnership to provide helpers and resources”.

The morning was enjoyed by all and the hope is that all the people who came along felt something of the community of St Andrew’s and the love of God through their play.  The organising team would like to thank members of St Andrew’s congregation who provided plants for the hanging baskets, made cakes, collected compost, made monetary donations towards the morning, and prayed for the event.  Please continue to remember our work with the children in your prayers.  We look forward to the next activity morning!
